Lord Gowrie was working with Thomas Gibson Fine Art during 1974-1979, when he returned to politics and held office in Edward Heath’s and Margaret Thatcher’s administrations, including Minister for the Arts 1983-85. He left the Cabinet to become Chairman of Sotheby’s in Europe during 1985-1994, then Chairman of the Arts Council of England during 1994-98.

Lord Gowrie was educated at Balliol College Oxford, Harvard and University College London. He lives in London and Wales and is married to Adelheid von der Schulenburg.
